eTail Boston 2011: Day 1

On opening night eTail Boston was already in full swing. Monday’s action began with an Advanced Search Summit, a Social Commerce Summit and an email Marketing and Segmentation Summit. Featured speakers included leaders from Crocs, HP, and CoffeeForLess. But the event kicked into high gear with the evening cocktail party. Retailers and vendors mingled and the event looked to be bigger than the projected 700 attendees.

Tuesday’s agenda will split into three tracks:

  • Personalization and Targeting
  • ROI-Focused Multi-Channel Marketing
  • Online Video and Rich Media

(Guess which one we’ll be at!)

Invodo CEO Craig Wax will present on eCommerce Video Innovation during Track C at 2:45p, and Joe Preston from Invodo client Really Good Stuff will speak on a panel as well. Tuesday is shaping up to be a fantastic and very busy day.

We’ll tweet from the show floor as @Invodo, so follow us on Twitter to see what’s happening in real time.

eMarketer and the Catalog Coverage Question

I was pleased to see Invodo CEO Craig Wax quoted in an eMarketer article yesterday on How Retailers Can Make Video Efforts More Effective. He made the point that we’re still a long way from market saturation. Most retail sites have tens, not hundreds or thousands, of videos. That translates into lots of upside for retailers willing to make a smart investment in broadening that video catalog coverage. Check out the full article – it’s worth reading.

We’ve learned through experience that the smartest investment involves choosing both the right products and the right type of video.A little math will show that you can make more money with effective video on the top 20% of your products than with less effective video across your entire catalog – details in this post.

We’ve found that eCommerce video, designed for the Web and optimized to drive conversion in a retail context, is 1.5x more effective than general-purpose promotional video – more details on that coming very soon.

And we’ve consistently heard from clients who test them that Flash animations and automatically produced slideware fall flat in driving conversion. Perhaps that’s because they lack the human touch that can become a real differentiator in an online shopping experience.

That’s been our experience so far – scaling real video with real people drives real results. It’s led us to create an entirely different model of video production, one designed to enable both scale and human connection. What experiences have you had with video as a retailer or consumer?

Invodo in Digiday and ReelSEO

In case you missed it, Invodo CEO Craig Wax was recently featured in both Digiday and ReelSEO with information of interest to retailers.

In DigiDay Craig laid out Three Keys for Mobile Video Success. Implementing video on a retail site is a great step, but optimizing for mobile is increasingly important. After all, almost 300 million smartphones are sold daily, leading consumers to become “informed impulse buyers” who have product information at their fingertips. Optimizing your video program for mobile starts with asking the right questions and setting the right goals. There’s more on the topic in DigiDay here.

In ReelSEO Craig covered eCommerce Video Trends for 2011. Have you thought about how video can, if done properly, support retail prices? As well as augmenting social commerce and helping organizations meet multiple business objectives? A new year is starting and these trends are already underway, so take a look.

Invodo in Chief Marketer and Practical eCommerce

Invodo’s Craig Wax was featured in two publications recently with some useful information for anyone considering video for online retail.

In Chief Marketer, Craig’s article The Essential eCommerce Video Cheat Sheet covers the terms and concepts you as a retailer should be familiar with in considering a video program designed to enhance experience and drive conversion. It’s a complete glossary from Above the Fold to View-Through Rate – everything you need to know to come across as an expert in discussing eCommerce video.

There’s more useful information in a Practical eCommerce interview with Craig (also available as a podcast). In conversation with Practical eCommerce’s Kerry Murdock, Craig covers details that make a video drive conversion effectively – the right tone, presenter, length, scripting and other details that make a big difference in conversion effectiveness.

We’re pleased to be part of the conversation that defines eCommerce video as this rapidly-expanding space heats up. To stay on top of it, keep up with us on the blog, on our always-updated video statistics page, and in the latest news section of our site.

Take a Shot with Invodo at Shop.org!

While few things excite me more than a great pair of shoes, I have to say that this year’s Shop.org Annual Summit in Dallas, TX has me pretty fired up! Nothing is better than being around new eCommerce technologies and in the company of the most esteemed online retailers in the IR 500.

eCommerce video is the next big thing in online retailing and I like nothing more than to show off Invodo’s amazing production capabilities, eCommerce focused video platform and player, and our ability to distribute videos to social media sites.

Go ahead and add Invodo, booth 218, to your EXPO Plan here and don’t forget to read, “Getting the Most out of Your Shop.org Summit” to get tips from our CEO, Craig Wax.

See you at Shop.org!

Why I'm Here

The Invodo blog has been bringing you news and entertainment for the last 18 months, and I’ve finally been able to convince our marketing team to let me join the fun.  I’ll be blogging about business in general, video specifically, along with whatever pops into my mind.

Since this is my first post, I’m going to write about why I first decided to join Invodo at the beginning of the year.    I’ve always been interested in how the internet and technology are changing the way people find, learn about, and ultimately buy products.  This curiosity is what led me to jump into the internet in the first place when I joined GoTo.com back in the nineties – - for those of you who don’t know, GoTo invented paid search and Google later copied the model to make billions!

Anyway, the point is that the internet is enabling businesses to constantly improve the way products are marketed to consumers.  Video enables companies to take this to an entirely new level.  With video, businesses are able to provide a knowledgeable, virtual sales person right when the consumer needs it …. on the product page when he or she is deciding whether or not to put the product in the shopping cart.  Just imagine how great life would be if you never had to search for help at a Home Depot store because someone was with you ever step of the way!

So when I learned about Invodo and how it was bringing product videos to online retailers, I knew this was a company that would provide tremendous value to manufacturers and the online retailers who sell their products.   With typical online sales conversion rates of 1-3%, every tenth of a percentage point increase is gold to retailers.  And I saw Invodo as a company that would enable manufacturers and retailers to mine the gold.  That’s why I joined Invodo!
