Sony OLED – About: Hi, folks. My name’s Ernie Block. I’m a senior product marketing trainer from SEL at Sony in San Diego, and we’re here to show you some great new technology. I’ll call it OLED, organic light emitting diode. Now we introduced the XEL-1 product from Sony one year ago at CES, and this is the first shipping product. It’s actually the first OLED from anyone on the market. Now of course you notice the thing here is an outstanding picture with black level, unlike any other television device on earth. Basically, the black level is caused because we use a very simple system of organic powder that rests in cavities to create a picture, and when there’s no electricity going through that powder, there’s absolutely no light coming out of the TV. That’s how we get our contrast ratio up over a million to one on this product. The other way cool thing about OLED is, of course, how thin the screen is. The screen on the XEL-1 is only three millimeters thin, or it’s as thin as about three credit cards next to each other. So it’s a great product that’s in the market right now. Also, everybody wants to know when is OLED going to be thinner and when is it going to get bigger in the marketplace. We don’t have any firm product announcements yet, but our engineers did create these marvelous concept designs behind us which can show you where OLED may go in the future. Now you may note the 11-inch TV behind me is the same size as the current shipping product, the XEL-I, which is three millimeters thin, but that’s only one millimeter thin now. So it’s a cool, cool exercise in design. We also have some larger concepts to show off. A 21-inch product that may come to market someday and you can see, of course, the quality is there, and this is the 21-inch product with a 1366x768 resolution. The large television concept in the middle, the 27-inch piece, is a concept design to show that OLED can be larger and can have a true 1080x1920 resolution. The XEL-1 is shipping now; the other products we’ve shown you may come to be in the future, but we wanted to show you what our engineers are capable of in terms of concept designs potentially for the future.
