Nicklaus Golf Spin Slot Wedges: Hi, I’m Clay Long, and I serve as chief designer for Nicklaus Golf Equipment Company. Today, we’re here to look at the new 2009 Spin Slot Wedges from Nicklaus. The spin slot wedges exhibit the unique relieved sole of some of the slot wedge designs of the past available at Nicklaus Golf Equipment. This design actually enables the heel of the club, when the club is open, to get lower to the ground and get under the ball quicker than a conventional sole. As you know, many shots with a wedge, and particularly a sand wedge, are hit with an open face around the green, both sand shots and lob shots. And this relieved sole greatly facilitates these kinds of shots to be hit around the green. The spin slot also exhibits a milled face and machined grooves for maximum grooved width and depth and maximum spin on the golf ball. The grooves are the maximum allowed by the USGA and provide exceedingly high rates of spin, both on full shots and chip shots. The club is designed around a very classic design shape. This year, we’ve added a little bit of offset to the club, at the direction of Jack Nicklaus himself, who prefers slightly more offset in his wedges than what we find in standard wedges.
