Elixir Polymer Coating Overview: Elixir Strings were the first coated string on the market, and what sets Elixir apart is the coating. It's a polymer coating that we actually enclose around a finished string. Wound strings are typically have a winding that goes around the core of the string and it creates what we call a critical zone of tone. And what happens is you will build up either oils or dirt from playing and from touching the guitar and it will corrode the string.
