Brooks BioMoGo Biodegradable Running Shoe
Brooks - Bio MoGo: When it comes to making a healthier planet, even the shoes you wear can make a difference. That’s why Brooks engineered the Bio Mogo midsole. Here’s a Bio Mogo shoe from Brooks. It’s midsole is made out of a really smart material that degrades quickly when it is placed in an active enclosed landfill, and it doesn’t just degrade, it biodegrades, meaning that the stuff that the midsole degrades into is non toxic, and can be used as nutrients for plants and animals. Now here’s a traditional shoe, it’s midsole is made out of unaltered petroleum products which can take up to 1000 years to degrade in a landfill. By comparison, a midsole made with Bio Mogo takes about 20 years to fully degrade. That’s 50 times faster. How does a Bio Mogo midsole degrade so fast? It all starts with three conditions that are unique to an active enclosed landfill, the presence of lots of microbes, very little oxygen, and plenty of moisture. This turns the materials that make up the Bio Mogo midsole into tasty nutrients for a variety of microscopic organisms that live in a landfill. Here’s a highly magnified look at a traditional midsole after one year in a landfill. Not much going on here in terms of degradation. Now take a look at the Bio Mogo material. See how those microbial critters have made a tasty meal out of this midsole. Mmmm, delicious. So how does Bio Mogo make a difference for the environment? In addition to returning nutrients to nature, and using fewer raw materials in the manufacturing process, Bio Mogo’s faster degradation means it produces much less waste. That means smaller landfills. It also adds up to a more sustainable way of making midsoles that leaves a smaller, well, footprint on the planet. You might also be wondering, do Brooks shoes made with Bio Mogo perform just as well as other shoes? The answer is yes. Bio Mogo midsoles are just as resilient, long lasting, and comfortable as traditional Brooks midsoles, and don’t worry Bio Mogo midsoles won’t degrade while you own them. The process that breaks down the midsole only begins when the shoes are subjected to the unique conditions of an active enclosed landfill. Because we think making more earth friendly products is important we’re not wasting any time putting Bio Mogo midsoles under your feet. You’ll find the Bio Mogo midsole on most Brooks shoes by the end of 2009, and don’t think we’re stopping there. We think Bio Mogo is so important that we’re sharing the technology with other running shoe makers. That way we can all help make a difference. At Brooks, our long term goal is to create fully sustainable, earth friendly, running shoes that perform just as well as other shoes. Bio Mogo is just one stride.
